What Certainty Is Actually Costing You: The Hidden Price of Always Needing to Know
Apr 07, 2026Why Increasing Uncertainty Might Be the Most Healing Thing You Can Do
In this post:
- Why the certainty industry is selling you something that costs more than you think
- What it means to live in many worlds, and why you already do it
- The shamanic and mystery tradition understanding of reality that Western culture has almost entirely forgotten
- One practical thing you can do this week
There is a question I want to ask you, and it might make you a little uncomfortable.
How much of your life right now is organized around knowing things?
Knowing what is wrong. Knowing what needs to change. Knowing where things should go, what you want, what would finally make you happy. I ask because I notice it in myself, I notice it in my clients, and I notice it in the whole conversation happening right now in culture. We buy courses that help us know more. We book readings to get clarity. We plan vacations by pre-reading every review, choosing only restaurants with perfect scores, visiting only the spots everyone has already photographed, leaving nothing up to chance.
And here is my argument today: what if we have it backwards?
What if the most healing thing you can do is not to reduce uncertainty, but to increase it?
What certainty is actually costing you
There is an entire industry built on selling you certainty. Buy this one thing and get this result. This supplement, this method, this programme, this exact sequence of steps. And the ads for all of these things work the same way: they sell you a feeling first, a sense that the longed-for version of your life is reachable and measurable and close, and then they offer you the solution.
On a global level, this is relentless. On a personal level, it is even more so. Like you said, there is this pressure to have a goal, to become a specific version of yourself, to measure the distance and close it. And our goals are real. Our problems are real. Our grief is real. I am not dismissing any of that.
But when we organize our entire reality around what can be named and measured and moved towards, something closes down. Something very valuable. And most of us do not even notice it is gone until something larger than we can handle arrives, and we find ourselves with nowhere to stand.
You already live in more than one world
Here is a question. Do you daydream?
That is one world. Do you sometimes get taken over by your emotions, swept somewhere beyond logic and strategy? That is another. Do you sometimes hit a state of sharp, narrow focus, where everything else disappears and you are just doing? That is another. And do you sometimes feel the imminent presence of something larger, that state of vast openness that might come on a sailboat, or out in nature, or in the middle of the night with stars overhead?
That is another world.
So you are already moving between them. The daydream world, the emotional world, the doing world, the world of sacred presence. None of them are metaphors. None of them are less real than the others. And all of them, except the doing world, are full of uncertainty. Nothing is certain in a daydream. Nothing is certain in that moment of bliss on the ocean. The only one where we try to make everything certain is the doing mind, the ego, the manager.
And we have done a lot of weightlifting. It is time to start stretching.
What the old traditions knew
Every shamanic tradition I have worked with, every mystery school, every thread of occult and magical knowledge I have followed, has always understood this: reality is not one thing. It is many things, and all of them are held simultaneously.
Many worlds, many timelines, many truths existing at once without canceling each other out.
And the people and practitioners who can consciously move between those worlds, they are able to hold grief and beauty at the same time. Terror and wonder. The known and the radically unknown. That word radical, by the way, comes from roots. To be radically uncertain is to be deeply rooted in something that does not require the mind's approval.
I think about this when I think about our parents getting older. I think about what it will feel like when one of them dies, and I know the grief will be immense. But I also know that as someone who has trained in this for almost two decades, I will be able to hold many truths at once in that moment. The loss. The beauty in the breakdown. The love that makes the grief possible in the first place. The sense of moving from one generation into another, which is very real to me right now, in a way it was not before.
It is not that it will hurt less. It is that I will not be confined to a single experience of it. When you can hold many worlds, you can meet whatever comes from a place that is wider and greater than the event itself.
This is what the oracles knew. What the priestesses knew. What witches and magicians and mystery school initiates have always known: the ones who could consciously move between worlds were the ones who could hold the community through collapse.
A practical thing you can do this week
This is not an advanced spiritual achievement. It is a natural human capacity that has been educated out of us. We are simply educating it back in.
So here is one practice, just for this week.
Notice a moment where you are gripping a single version of reality very tightly. One place where certainty feels necessary and the unknown feels dangerous.
Do not try to fix it or solve it. Just notice it. And then ask:
What if there are other worlds, other realities, touching this one right now, and I simply have not felt them yet?
Hold that question with genuine openness. That is already the beginning of a practice of living between worlds. You do not have to earn access to this. The capacity is already in you, right now, as you read this.
And once you know how to touch the sacred, and you trust that your experience of it is real, everything changes.
