Even the oldest tree will stretch its creaking limbs to reach for new heights when summer comes around. Blossoms unfurl, shimmering with the beauty of life at its furthest tips while gnarled and twisted trunks with many ancient lines hold on to roots that have dug their way deep into the earth. We are reminded that though we grow older every year the glory of summer days stays available to us. We might become crinkly and crooked, yet our wrinkles only offer a contrast that highlights the beauty of what comes out of us when we stretch and grow towards the light.

Growing is always a little uncomfortable. At the beginning and towards the end of our lives we are more prone to feel it physically as our bodies demand to be stretched in our youth and our brains demand to stretch our bodies with age. In the years in between the discomfort is often mental and emotional. Our urge to grow is as intrinsic to our humanity as it is to nature. It is part of the cycle of life and a reminder that we humans are part of what is included in the word ‘nature’. 

Is it a great error in many of our languages to have a word for nature? After all, naming the thing and having that name be different from the word we have for ourselves creates the tendency to separate ourselves from it in our thinking.

In this month, as you grow and stretch beyond your shapes and states, remember to enjoy the process and reach for the light. We are not far from the Summer Solstice, the moment where we begin our descent into darkness. So relish in the light and remember, the light shines in you, too.
