My Personal Magic Practice and How You Can Find Yours

Oct 08, 2025

I often talk about my Magic Practice. Whether you follow me on instagram or read my blog posts, you will see me mention it regularly. It's not a term used a lot by others, so I will take a moment and share from my heart to yours what I mean when I say "Magic Practice".

Disclaimer: This post cannot possibly be complete or all encompassing. That would be a book. Instead I will paint images with words so that you may feel what I mean with your heart and be inspired to find your own Magic Practice along the way.

Let's start with the words.

Magic: A feeling and power much like love, It inspires, it opens our hearts, it changes the world. We all have it in us, it is innate. It is also a skill we can practice and excel in beyond what we thought was possible. Intentionally and spontaneously it can change our perception of everything we thought we knew. It is a path of beauty, awe, wonder and communion with mystery.

Practice: Take this one quite literally. It is not doing, it is practicing. Every day we do it we can hope to get a little better at it as we approach magic with the mind of a student. Some days it feels like we took 10 steps backwards and we struggle. So we keep practicing. Other days it feels like we are the best ever at this thing called magic. So we remember we are students and tomorrow might be different. And we keep practicing.

So what does this look like in practice?

Here are three examples of my personal Magic Practice at this moment in time.

Ritual: I sit on the ground. In front of me, from left to right, is a flickering candle, a cup of water, and a bowl with the smoke of incense rising up. It wafts across the water and candle, at times changing direction to touch me, before dissipating. I sit quietly, coming into presence with my body and senses while stilling my mind. It's not easy today. I notice hidden tension in my face. I didn't sleep well as my baby kept me awake.

I remember a ritual I did the night before, and what arose during it. Much of the magic rises up when I listen. More rises up when I turn what I hear into practice. So I decide to do it this morning. I invite them all in. All spirits, all gods that I feel kinship with. My benevolent ancestors. The councils. The star. They are here and I am listening.

The ritual wraps itself up in its own time. I know what to do, how to utilize my time, and for the present I am free from any unhelpful habits and thought patterns. Without procrastination I continue my day by doing what is most important with complete focus.

Presence: Following my ritual I do what needs to be done. The admin I have been pushing ahead of me for weeks is complete in minutes. Next, I turn to writing for Magic is Key. As I stand in the kitchen with my laptop on the counter writing as I wait for the water to boil so I can pour myself a hot chocolate, the skies open up. There is a loud bang, the rain pours with more intensity than any shower can offer.

I stop everything and open the windows. I listen and open up myself. Inspiration starts pouring in and my focus intensifies at the same rate as my joy. I feel a slight tinge in my heart as I yearn to go outside and run, forgetting all else. But I have a baby sleeping close by and my place is here. I feel the beauty of the sorrow mixed with joy as I inhale the smell of rain on summer lands.

Writing: It took me a very long time to admit to myself that writing is one of my greatest forms of magic. Though it has always come to me easily, I denied it for many years. Even when I was told by others, I was flippant about it. Now I embrace it as part of who I am.

As I write, by pen and by keyboard, worlds come into being, structures find their way out of me and I know I am making magic. It is not always tangible in the sense that I know where it leads me. Yet I can see myself getting better every time, and I can see that the more I do it, the more I end up doing it, and I am excited for what is to come.

Your Magic Practice:

1. Ask yourself, what is the most simple altar you can set up that opens you up to the experience of magic? Set it up, take a seat, and start listening.

2. What delights your senses? What weather, what foods? When whatever it is comes, pause all else and be fully present as you listen to the messages wonder and awe.

3. Is there something that has always come to your naturally? Make time for it. See how it creates worlds and begets inspiration. Notice how it brings you to the present moment.
