From Anxiety to Awe: How to Fall in Love with the Unknown
Sep 10, 2025
There are stories of the fates. You know the three I am talking about. One is young, one is a mother, and one is ancient. They spin, weave, knot and cut the threads that are our fates. They know all that was, all that is and all this shall be. They are neither gods nor spirit and far more ancient than either. Before there was time or necessity they were there and once everything is no more, they will still be.
There are stories of those who meet with the fates, often beneath the roots of the World Tree that is our cosmos, our multiverse, our many-layered reality. By the well that waters its roots they spin and weave and knot and cut as petitioners, human and more than human, come with their questions of fate. The answer is often wrapped in mystery, a poetic tapestry and the chain of causation shrouded in a veil of mist.
I am sharing this with you to paint a picture of something we all have in common: We live with the unknown. At times it can be infuriating, stress-inducing, anxiety-triggering. What will tomorrow bring? Are we safe? Is this a good place to live? Can I change my situation? Will I ever find love? What is the meaning of it all?
We are ridden with questions that know no answers or rather, they know so many answers they might as well know none. It is Plato's cave, it is the Shining Isle, it is the thread of the fates and it is only for the fates to know.
In all our wanting and yearning to know it can be easy to forget that all is as it's meant to be, and so we humans are shaped, or have shaped ourselves, to live with the unknown. In a time that is in love with cause and effect, with the science of deduction, reverse-engineering outcomes, and infinite algorithms designed to know what cannot fit in a single human mind, it can be hard to love the unknown.
Here is what happens when we allow ourselves to fall in love with the unknown:
- We awaken to wonder.
- The world becomes poetry.
- We become children once more: Creative bright lights of joy.
- Time slows down.
- We see signs and symbols all around us, drenched in profound meaning.
- We awaken to the mystery of ourselves, the cosmos and life.
To be able to see the sheer beauty of the unknown is part of the essence of who we are.
To know your essence is to fall in love with yourself and the unknown.
